In 1958, two talented Italian designers, Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni, designed the first prototype of the taccia lamp. The shape of the lamp was composed of a metal base and a semi-circular lampshade, and its highly designed appearance resembled radar, hence the name Radar Table Lamp.

The Taccia, a postmodern-looking table lamp, was designed by the Castiglioni brothers who chose to use plastic for the Taccia's signature bowl-shaped reflector, which was both more cost-effective and lighter. However, when the first Taccia prototype was built and lit, the heat from the incandescent light source deformed the plastic, and they realized they had been completely wrong.
Later, hand-blown glass was used for the Taccia's bowl-shaped reflector, and the Doric column-like form of the base wasn't just for aesthetics; it was designed to increase the surface area of the base as much as possible to dissipate the large amount of heat generated by the light source, which acted as a heat sink for a small motor for the incandescent light source fitted to the Taccia.

1. The Taccia lamp comes in two sizes and four colors (black, silver, copper, and white). The original design was for the large size, but the smaller version is more suitable for most homes.
2.The transparent diffuser of the Taccia is available in two materials: PMMA acrylic and mouth-blown glass. The acrylic version is more affordable and was actually the material the Castiglioni brothers originally intended to use. However, the first version used glass because the halogen light source at the time produced too much heat for acrylic to handle. It wasn't until the widespread use of LED lighting that Flos reintroduced the acrylic version.
3.The Taccia consists of three parts: a metal base, a transparent diffuser, and a white reflector. These parts are not connected by any fasteners and simply sit on top of one another. Due to its "top-heavy" design, it can be very unstable once placed. If you have active pets or children at home, it’s important to be cautious before purchasing!
4.The Taccia’s lighting mode is quite unique. While it may look like a large radar dish, making you think the light will project upwards, in reality, the light is diffused through the reflector and emitted diagonally downwards. Therefore, it is not suitable for placement at a low height (as it may cause glare to the eyes). It works better when placed on a desk or above a dresser, where the light is scattered and reflected off the surface, creating a soft ambient light.
